Why is Baptism Necessary?
Baptism is often described as “an outward eXpression of an inward confession.” At some point, after a person decides to make Jesus their Lord and Savior, water baptism offers a wonderful opportunity for believers to make a public declaration of that decision in front of their family, friends, and fellow believers. This may be a new believer or it may be someone who has been a believer for a while, but has come to the place where they feel it’s important for them to recommit themselves to the Lord through baptism.
But the main reason we baptize with water is because Jesus tells us to! In the great commission, Jesus tells His followers to not only to go out and make disciples, but to also baptize them in His name.
Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” – Matthew 28:19-20 (NIV)
Baptism doesn’t save us...only Jesus does that. But it helps us acknowledge all that Jesus’ death and resurrection purchased for us. Like His death on the cross, the immersion in water represents the death of our past. The water washing over us is symbolic of Jesus’ blood cleansing us of our sins. And emerging from the water, as He was resurrected on the third day, we too step into a new life, clean and empowered by the Holy Spirit.
Even Jesus, our perfect eXample, was baptized before He began His ministry or performed a single miracle. And if baptism was necessary for Him, we can be sure it’s a necessary part of the process for us as well.
When all the people were being baptized, Jesus was baptized too. And as he was praying, heaven was opened and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.” – Luke 3:21-22 (NIV)
Baptisms are offered several times throughout the year as needed to serve the needs of our congregation. If you’re interested in making that neXt step in your personal relationship with Jesus, click the button below to register!
